Weather balloons transporting thousands of packs of cigarettes have caused flight disruptions in Lithuania, as the country's main airport was required to halt operations for several hours when dozens of them floated into the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The temporary shutdown led to the cancellation of 30 flights disrupting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Authorities reported that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with a pair of them ending up directly over the aviation facility.
As many as 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and close to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
At least 11 balloons carrying eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though this number could rise, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, representatives clarified that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - Belarusian smoking products - are common occurrences in the Baltic region and Poland."
So far this year, numerous meteorological balloons have been documented crossing into Lithuania from Belarus, while 966 were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
Simultaneously, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has documented over one hundred incidents in which smuggled items were delivered from its neighbor using the weather devices.
Criminal Methodology
When questioned about why criminals use a method that is particularly vulnerable to weather factors rather than more controllable drones, representatives elaborated that "Atmospheric equipment are simple mechanisms used by smugglers - they are cheaper than drones for moving tobacco products from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "Our services' aim is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and participants so that these practices become economically unsustainable and do not pose risk to civil aviation."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a time of increased concerns in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have caused air traffic disruption across the region.
Recent incidents in adjacent nations have led European authorities to speed up talks about improving airspace protection throughout the region.
