No fewer than 13 people perish and 98 wounded in train derailment in the nation of Mexico.

A deadly railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive opposition criticisms regarding the pace and handling of the country's flagship government projects.

The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link constructed to connect the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific Ocean across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to provide an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We are going to rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” declared the country's president.

The leader confirmed that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in critical condition. The leader noted plans to go to Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature development scheme of the immediate past president, whose presidency ended the year before. This rail line was intimately linked to his government's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another ambitious rail project from that era, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to revitalize the economy of a relatively less developed part of the country.

Construction Oversight and Worries

The development of both train projects was overseen by the armed forces, marking a significant expansion of its responsibilities in national works. They were completed at an fast-tracked rate, defying predictions to be at least partly inaugurated before the end of that government.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently sparked persistent concerns over operational security.

  • Sunday's crash was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also seen several non-deadly derailments.

Calls for Audit and Pause

In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a key rival party demanded an prompt suspension in the development and management of all similar projects.

This halt was proposed until the completion of a comprehensive safety audit. The party stated that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."

In response, the president maintained that the train had been running in full compliance with all safety requirements. Promises were given that the government would remain "diligent" in both the development and management of these national initiatives.
